LiDAR vs vSLAM vs gyro navigation
Robot vacuums use one of three navigation approaches. LiDAR (a spinning laser turret) maps a room by measuring distances directly and is generally the most accurate and consistent in low light or darkness. vSLAM / camera navigation uses an upward- or forward-facing camera plus visual landmarks to build a map — it works well in bright rooms but can struggle in the dark or in visually repetitive spaces. Pascals (Pa) measure the vacuum motor's rated suction pressure, and manufacturers advertise ever-higher numbers — some flagship docks now claim over 20,000 Pa. In practice, these are peak or lab-condition figures, not sustained real-world suction, and the marketing race has made the raw number a weaker signal than it looks. Mop-lift height and carpet-avoidance
Flagship docks increasingly include an automatic mop-lift mechanism that raises the mop pad several millimeters off the floor when the robot crosses onto carpet, preventing it from dragging a wet pad across fabric. This is a meaningful upgrade over older designs that required you to manually remove the mop tray before vacuuming carpeted rooms. Lower-tier and budget models often skip this feature entirely. Self-empty vs self-wash vs basic docks
Dock automation comes in tiers. A basic dock just charges the robot. A self-empty dock adds a base station that suctions the robot's dustbin into a larger bag, extending manual emptying from days to weeks or months. A self-wash/self-dry dock goes further, rinsing mop pads with hot water and drying them with warm air to prevent mildew smell, sometimes also auto-refilling the mop's clean-water tank. HEPA vs washable filters
HEPA filters capture a very high percentage of fine particles, including allergens and dander, but are typically disposable and need periodic replacement (roughly every 1-2 months with regular use) rather than being washed. Washable filters are more common on budget models, cost nothing to maintain beyond your time, but generally filter less finely and lose effectiveness faster if not rinsed regularly. Typical battery and runtime ranges
Most modern robot vacuums charge fully in roughly 3-6 hours and run for somewhere in the 150-300 minute range per charge on standard mode, though heavy suction settings and thick carpet reduce runtime. Nearly all current models auto-return to the dock, recharge, and resume the same cleaning job automatically once battery allows — so runtime limits rarely stop a job from finishing, they just add time.
Brush types for pet hair
Traditional bristle brushes are effective on hard floors but wrap with long hair over time, especially from shedding pets, reducing suction until you cut the hair free.
